Electrical protective design, the choice of devices, contributes directly to ensuring power and availability ensuring they operate in conjunction with other devices in an electrical system.

In summary, if a fault occurs in a circuit, only the protective device nearest the fault should trip. If selectivity is not correct, further devices immediately upstream will also trip, resulting in multiple circuits and equipment also being lost.
